Therapeutic Horticulture

Therapeutic horticulture (TH) uses plants, gardening, and plant-based activities to promote physical, mental, and emotional wellness in individuals. TH offers a unique and effective way to provide benefits such as cognitive stimulation, physical activity, social interaction, mindfulness, and a connection to nature. Engaging in gardening or plant-based activities has been shown to reduce stress levels, enhance mood, and improve overall mental health. The communal aspect of these activities provides opportunities for social interaction and support.

At Plant4Good, our programs are designed to provide a nurturing environment where participants can explore the therapeutic benefits of plants and gardening under the guidance of a therapeutic horticulture practitioner.

We can provide TH sessions for a variety of populations:

  • Senior living facilities including skilled nursing and memory care units.

  • College wellness programming to support student mental health.

  • K-12 school programming and after-school clubs.

  • Individuals with disabilities.

Some examples of programs include:

  • Making nature mandalas of plant material.

  • Flower pressing and making cards with the flowers.

  • Planting vegetable seeds (this can extend to involve seedling care, planting, and tending to a vegetable garden).

  • Making herbal tea bags from dried herbs then have tea as a group.

  • Making small flower arrangements.

  • Planting annuals in an existing garden bed at your facility.
